“Mom? We’re here!” Nate called as the couple walked into the foyer of the apartment.

It was more of a four-by-four tiled entry behind the door, but his mom preferred to refer to it as the “foyer.”

“Oh, good! Sami, do you know how to make gravy?”

Nate’s mother called from the kitchen among the whir of the microwave and something delicious sizzling on the stovetop.

“You’re in luck, Mrs. Peters, I definitely know how to make gravy,” Sami replied with a smile at Nate.

Her smile was as much to reassure Nate as it was for herself. She took off her shoes and headed in the direction of the voice. She steeled herself for what would prove to be a challenging evening. Not because Nate’s family wouldn’t be warm, loving and inviting; but because she knew that they would probably be all of those things and more.

“Oh, call me Nancy, please! Here is the whisk and the flour. Everything is almost done, I just need to finish sautéing and plating the rest of this.”

She gestured around the small square kitchen with one hand while swiping her bangs from her forehead with the back of her other hand. She smiled and Sami was struck by the similarities between her expression and the one Sami had grown to appreciate in Nate.

Sami glanced in the direction of Nancy’s arcing hand and was immediately impressed by the spread that was laid out in the kitchen. A juicy tenderloin sat seductively in the middle of a large platter. Nancy was expertly surrounding the loin decoratively with caramelized onions and apples. The sweet smell from the gravy had a hint of garlic and cinnamon that Sami deciphered had been made from a few of the strained apples and onions. Once Sami had stirred the delicious brew to a thick and creamy sauce, Nancy poured it generously over the loin. A large dish of garlic mashed potatoes almost made it to the table undisturbed (Nate had felt it his duty to test the potatoes before carrying them out of the kitchen).

“This is too much, Nancy. You really didn’t need to go through all of this trouble,” Sami said.

But even as she spoke the words, her stomach rumbled in protest. She could not stifle her body’s response to the incredible aromas filling the kitchen.

“Don’t even bother,” Nate said as he swept back into the kitchen to grab more dishes, “Mom loves to cook and bake and wouldn’t dream of having anyone over and prepare anything other than a feast.”

“That’s right,” Nancy said as she presented her cheek to Nate for a kiss.

He gave her a quick peck before reaching for an asparagus spear that his mother was plating. She swatted his hand, and he giggled and ran out of the kitchen.

“He’s still a little boy,” Nancy said conspiratorially to Sami, “Sometimes I wonder how he even remembers to tie his shoes.”

Sami giggled.

Nate took after his mother. Sami could see that he had a broader nose and more wide-set eyes, but he still held a strong resemblance to her.
